Bruks Siwertell wins industry award for safety in bulk handling

4 Dec 2024

Bruks Siwertell has won the prestigious International Bulk Journal (IBJ) Safety in Bulk Handling Award. The accolade recognizes Bruks Siwertell’s pioneering contributions to the safety of the dry bulk handling industry and highlights the market-leading capabilities of Siwertell ship unloaders.

Winner of Safety in Bulk handling

Many dry bulk cargoes come with inherent safety risks; they can be oxygen-depleting and self-igniting and can also be highly volatile, such as sulfur.

“We continually work towards improving the safety standards of material handling, ensuring that our equipment can mitigate risks and protect operators and the environment. This award is a welcome recognition of these efforts,” says Daniel Frostberg, Sales Director, Bruks Siwertell.

Bruks Siwertell offers large-scale, fully enclosed, ship unloading systems capable of overcoming self-ignition, fire and explosion risks, while simultaneously protecting the environment from fugitive dust and spillage.

Bruks Siwertell’s standout safety innovation in dry bulk handling is the Siwertell Sulfur Safety System (4S). The 4S minimizes the risk of explosions and safely contains them if they do happen. It also reduces the risk of fires, and, if they occur, detects and them. An automatic system lubricates and cools the end and intermediate bearings to reduce the risk of ignition, along with water sprays at the inlet feeder and conveyor transfer points.

Fire detectors are also installed along the conveying line, which automatically initiate and stop the conveyors, preventing fire from spreading to storage areas. Sulfur handling Siwertell ship unloaders also have extra-thick steel casings that can withstand a sulfur explosion, while venting valves relieve the resulting pressure, and stainless-steel components minimize corrosion.

“For us, this award reflects our dedication to addressing critical risks, and safeguarding lives and the environment in dry bulk handling operations,” Frostberg adds.

The award was received by Bruks Siwertell representatives during a ceremony held at The Hilton Hotel in Antwerp, Belgium, at the end of November 2024.
