Seaside resort kept clean by Siwertell unloaders

Companies do not generally expect to be able to expand their operations and improve their environmental credentials at the same time, but the solutions offered by Bruks Siwertell have afforded China Energy’s Suizhong Power Plant the chance to do just that. 

Challenge

The 3,800MW coal-fired Suizhong Power Plant in Liaoning, China, needed to efficiently increase its annual intake of coal to around six million metric tons in the most environmentally friendly way possible.

The site is situated close to various beaches and tourist hotspots on the coast of the Bohai Sea. Therefore, no coal dust or spillage was permitted.

The unloading system also had to be light enough to suit a new jetty and minimize any structural costs incurred by equipment weight.

Solution

Suizhong Power Plant’s owners decided to replace its two aging grab cranes and equip its new jetty with modern continuous unloaders, capable of handling high volumes of coal. It opted for two Siwertell ST 790-D screw-type ship unloaders.

Delivered at the end of 2019, the unloaders were transported fully assembled on a barge from Nantong and lifted onto the jetty using a floating crane. Able to serve ships of up to 50,000 dwt, each system is capable of unloading all grades of coal, at a rated capacity of 1,500t/h.

Results 

Suizhong’s requirements of increased capacity with excellent environmental credentials have been met. Li Lun, a representative of the Engineering Department of Suizhong Power Plant, told Bruks Siwertell: “By using Siwertell ship unloaders, our through-ship capacity has significantly increased, which substantially reduces ship berthing fees. With their totally enclosed design, we have also gained a clean jetty, hence environmental protection is hugely increased. 

“Meanwhile, the excellent screw conveyors simplify the whole unloading operation, all costs are reduced, and they make it safer, so both our operators and maintenance staff feel more comfortable in their daily duties.

“We are very satisfied. The two ship unloaders have proved their good performance and reliable operation since they were installed. All technical targets and requirements in the contract are fulfilled and they are the essential part in our jetty construction accomplishment.”
