By instigating a number of relatively small changes and actions, Bruks Siwertell’s Bjuv-based business unit in Sweden is set to achieve an annual saving of 36 MWh in electricity and 60 MWh in heating; equivalent to around 67.1 metric tons of carbon emissions.

Sustainability goal: environmental

Bruks Siwertell Group is aiming to reduce its carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2030, in comparison to levels recorded in 2019, and switch to 100 percent renewable electricity in the same six-year timeframe.

Initiatives are ongoing throughout the Group to achieve these targets, with some business units working alongside specialist companies to identify areas where relatively simple and quick actions can make a significant difference in terms of environmental impact and cost savings.

Bruks Siwertell’s Bjuv-based business unit in Sweden instigated a climate report earlier in the year. It was undertaken by expert environmental impact company, Energyse Energitjänster AB, Sweden.

Solution and results

The Energyse report highlighted a number of actions that required minimal input, and since being identified, all except a small number have been instigated over the last two months. They included tasks such as changing the ambient temperature in the canteen to 19 degrees Celsius.

Other actions have seen the compressors in the production and warehouse areas switched off overnight and at the weekends; the temperatures lowered in the warehouse and welding area; heat curves and welding extraction being reviewed, along with all routines connected to summer and winter periods. The operating hours for ventilation systems have also been adjusted along with sealing air leaks in the compressors.

“These relatively simple actions are having a significant impact,” says Peter Gustavsson, Logistics Manager, Bruks Siwertell. “It has been really helpful to see where we can save both costs and reduce our environmental impact; a win-win scenario. It is a good reminder to turn dials down or switch things off when not in use.”

The outcome of actioning the points identified is resulting in an annual saving of 36 MWh in electricity and 60 MWh in heating. Calculations reveal that this amounts to 67.1 metric tons of CO2 equivalent or about 1,100 tree seedlings grown for ten years.

Monitoring and assessing sustainability milestones and achievements

Bruks Siwertell Group’s sustainability goals are assessed from an environmental, social, and governance (ESG) perspective, with each initiative falling into one or more of these categories. This is to clarify how different initiatives impact our overall sustainability work, and how their results can be used to maximum effect. It also contributes to our commitment to transparency. All aspects of our sustainability work are designed to be educational, so that we increase our knowledge and adjust our ambitions accordingly.
